About this event

Over the last two years, we collected seeds from four species of native grasses found growing in the Park after the fire. One species, commonly known as Pine Grass, only produces seeds after a fire; several pounds of seed were collecting in July 2021 by the multi-stake Zions Camp. We have grown over 6,000 grass plugs at a native plant nursery in Santa Cruz.

This Saturday, on March 4, 2023, we plan to transplant the native grass in select areas throughout the Park. This will be an excellent project for youth and families with young children. Each of the planting locations are in generally level open areas. The soil in each area has been cleared of vegetation.

Those wishing to plant native grass should meet at the Gideon Grove parking area (inside the chain link fence) at 9:00 a.m. for a project briefing, demonstration, and assignment.

The current forecast is for rain the day before, and a few, brief showers on Saturday. However, no heavy rain or strong winds are in the forecast. This weather will be perfect for the plants, and participants should dress accordingly.

Participants will want to wear layers of clothing (including a long sleeve layer or coat, and bring a rain layer or poncho), work gloves, good sturdy shoes, and bring water and snacks.

Instructions for the day, carpool, and other information will be given to those that RSVP.
